Itinerary Lares trek to Machu Picchu 5 days / 4 nights
Day 1: Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha Community
At 6:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to board the transport and head to Huaran. On the way, we will observe the famous Pisaq Archaeological Center from a viewpoint, as well as various traditional villages in the Sacred Valley such as Pisaq, Coya, Lamay, and Calca. The journey will take approximately one and a half hours.
Once we reach the Huarán Gorge, we will begin our uphill hike. At a slow pace, we will see crops, rock formations, and birds until we arrive at the Cancha Cancha community, where the locals will share their traditions and way of life with us. We will spend the night at a campsite.
Day 2: Cancha Cancha – Quiswarani
After a hearty breakfast, we will continue our slow ascent to the Pachacuteq Pass at 4,600 meters above sea level, where we will enjoy unparalleled surrounding views, including lagoons, rivers, waterfalls, typical Andean vegetation, and snow-capped peaks of the Urubamba Range. You will have plenty of photo opportunities.
After enjoying this breathtaking scenery, we will start descending towards the Quiswarani community, where we will have dinner and camp for the night.
Day 3: Quiswarani - Abra Huiquijasa – Cuncani
After breakfast, we will once again start an ascent, with brief stops to rest, towards the Abra de Huiquijasa at 4,200 meters above sea level. There, we will delight in beautiful landscapes, including lagoons full of birds, the snowy Colque Cruz, and clouds over the mountains—something truly magical.
Soon after, we will begin to descend towards the Cuncani community, a high Andean village where everything is traditional; houses are made of stone and mud with thatched roofs, and all residents wear traditional clothing. We will see their crops of grains, potatoes, and more, as well as animals such as llamas, cows, and sheep. We will spend the night at a campsite.
Day 4: Cuncani - Lares - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
On this final day of hiking, we will depart from our campsite at 8:00 am towards Lares. On the way, we will observe other traditional villages and the characteristic flora and fauna of the inter-Andean valley.
Around 10:00 am, we will arrive at the Lares Valley, specifically in the town of Lares, where we will visit its main attraction: the thermal medicinal baths. Here, we will enjoy a well-deserved, long, and relaxing bath.
After the rejuvenating bath, we will take a tourist transport to Ollantaytambo to board the train to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) and head to the reserved hotel where we will spend the night.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu archeological site. Return to Cusco
Breakfast will be at the hotel, after which we will head to the station to take the bus to the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. There, we will have a guided tour while enjoying the magnificent beauty and incomparable history of this citadel. After the guided tour, we will have some time to explore further on our own and take photos.
Finally, we will begin our return trip to Aguas Calientes with enough time to have lunch. We will then take the train to Ollantaytambo and finally the tourist transport to Cusco (arrival time in Cusco depends on the train, but it is generally after 7:00 pm)
