What we recommend bringing

Essential Gear for a Trek in Cusco

  1. Backpack (70L minimum) → Ideal for multi-day hikes like Salkantay, Ausangate, or Choquequirao. For shorter hikes, a 30-40L pack is enough.
  2. Sleeping bag → Make sure it’s rated for subzero temperatures if you’ll be camping in the mountains.
  3. Water (at least 4 liters per person) → For longer treks, bring a water filter or purification tablets to refill from streams or lakes.
  4. Trekking poles → Help reduce knee strain and improve balance on steep or rocky terrain.

Clothing & Footwear

  1. Trekking shoes/boots → Waterproof and with good grip for rough or slippery terrain.
  2. Hat & gloves → Mornings and nights can be freezing at high altitudes.
  3. Sunglasses & sunscreen → Sunlight is strong, and UV exposure is intense.
  4. Layered clothing → Wear moisture-wicking shirts, a fleece for warmth, and a windproof jacket to adapt to temperature changes.

Other trip recommendations

  1. Headlamp/flashlight with extra batteries → Essential for early morning starts or camping.
  2. Energy snacks → Nuts, protein bars, and chocolate to keep your energy up.
  3. Personal hygiene kit → Toilet paper, wet wipes, and biodegradable soap.
  4. Personal medications → Include ibuprofen, altitude sickness pills (like sorojchi pills), and blister bandages.
