SepRainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): Complete Trekking and Tour Guide
Visiting the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is an essential experience on your trip to Cusco. Located in one of the most impressive mountain ranges of the Peruvian Andes, this geological marvel stands out for the unique pigmentation of its minerals and stunning alpine landscapes filled with llamas, alpacas, and local communities.
To make the most of this hike, it is essential to plan your itinerary carefully and consider the high altitude.
| Trek Detail | Key Information |
|---|---|
| Maximum Altitude | 5,200 m a. s. l. (17,060 ft) |
| Hike Duration | 3 to 4 hours (approximately) |
| Difficulty Level | Moderate to High |
| Entrance Fee | S/. 10.00 soles (general fee) |
How to get to Vinicunca Mountain?
There are two main ways to reach the mountain from the Imperial City of Cusco:
- On your own: You need to catch a bus from the city of Cusco heading south to the town of Sicuani, where we recommend purchasing snacks and supplies for the trip. From Sicuani, take a shared taxi (colectivo) to Quesiuno or Pampachiri to start the trek. The road trip takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.
- With an organized tour: Currently, this is the most convenient and safest option, as it includes round-trip transportation, a professional guide, and meals. If you want to experience this trail, our agency Inca World Perú offers daily departures with top-quality service for the Rainbow Mountain trek.
What will you see along the trek?
The hike towards the Vinicunca Mountain takes between 3 and 4 hours depending on your pace and physical condition. Along the way, you will enjoy Andean valleys, traditional adobe houses, and alpacas or llamas running freely across the plains of Ausangate.
Halfway through the route, you will reach a checkpoint where you must pay the local entrance fee (S/. 10.00 soles). As you get closer to your destination, you will witness the changing colors of the surrounding hills until you reach the main viewpoint of the Rainbow Mountain.
After taking photos and selfies to treasure the memory, you will start the return hike to Pampachiri (Quesiuno), where you can enjoy lunch before boarding the transport back to the city of Cusco.
Important recommendations for your trip:
- Acclimatization: We strongly recommend staying 1 or 2 days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize properly, as the hike reaches an elevation of 5,200 meters above sea level.
- Clothing and Gear: Wear warm layered clothing, a windproof jacket, hiking shoes, and a rain poncho.
- Protection: Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, plenty of water for hydration, and coca candies to combat altitude sickness.
