OctFour Cusco Getaways for Peru's October 8 Holiday
The Battle of Angamos is a national holiday in Peru. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, October 8 — which means adding Friday gives you a four-day weekend. The question isn't whether to travel, but what to do with that time. Here are four routes from Cusco, ordered from lowest to highest intensity.
1. Cusco City Tour — the half-day option (from USD 10)
If you're already in Cusco or arriving Wednesday night, the Full Day City Tour is the most accessible route. Its classic 5.5-hour version covers five sites that define the city: the Qoricancha Temple — where the Incas lined the walls with gold plates —, the Sacsayhuamán fortress with its stone blocks weighing up to 120 tons, and the ceremonial sites of Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.
Includes hotel pickup, shared transport, and a guide in Spanish or English. Does not include the Qoricancha entrance fee (S/ 20, cash only) or the Tourist Ticket — partial (S/ 70) or full (S/ 130). Two departure times: 8:30 AM or 12:30 PM, so you can use the other half of the day to explore the historic center on your own.
2. Sacred Valley — the full-day classic (from USD 30)
The Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour covers in one day what many travelers spread across three: Pisac and its artisan market perched above agricultural terraces, Ollantaytambo with its temple complex and canals still standing since the 15th century, and Chinchero, where local weavers demonstrate natural-dye techniques unchanged for centuries.
The route departs early and returns at sunset. Full day, with buffet lunch included in the valley. Want to go further? The Super Valle Full Day adds Maras and Moray to the itinerary — all in a single day.
3. Humantay Lake or Rainbow Mountain — the altitude adventure (from USD 30)
For those looking for something a bus tour won't solve. Humantay Lake sits at 4,200 meters (13,780 ft), about a 2-hour hike from Soraypampa. The water has that turquoise color that looks photoshopped — it isn't. The tour leaves Cusco at 4:00 AM, stops in Mollepata for breakfast, and returns around 7:00 PM. Transport, breakfast, and lunch included.
The same-category alternative is the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) Trek, climbing to 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). Both require at least a couple of acclimatization days in Cusco first. Neither is advisable if you arrived from sea level the day before.
4. Maras, Moray & Salt Mines — history and landscape in half a day (from USD 35)
If you prefer something shorter but visually striking, the Maras and Moray Tour combines two sites unlike anything else in the valley. Moray is an Inca agricultural laboratory: concentric circular terraces where each level has its own microclimate — the temperature difference between the top and bottom terrace can reach 15°C (27°F). The Maras Salt Mines are over 3,000 salt pools cascading down the hillside, active since before the Inca empire and still producing today.
The tour takes half a day, leaving your afternoon free. It pairs well with the city tour: one in the morning, the other in the afternoon, covering Cusco and the valley in a single day.
How to plan the long weekend
With four days (Thursday through Sunday), a realistic combination would be:
- Thursday: City Tour in the morning + Maras-Moray in the afternoon.
- Friday: Sacred Valley full day.
- Saturday: Humantay Lake or Rainbow Mountain (high-effort day).
- Sunday: Rest, San Pedro Market, flight home.
Prices are referential and may vary by service type, ticket availability, and season. All routes include hotel pickup within central Cusco.
If you want to sort out the logistics in one go, Inca World can put together your package with any of these four routes — or combine them into a custom itinerary. The holiday is coming, and October slots don't last.
